Established by the Bern Treaty of 1874, the Universal Postal Union became a Specialized UN agency in 1948.
Its main task is to secure the organisation and the improvement of the postal services and to promote in this sphere the development of international collaboration and to undertake technical assistance in postal matters requested by the member countries. The counties that have adopted the UPU Constitution comprise a single postal territory.
